San Mateo County, CA – May 28, 2025 – Last Wednesday wasn't just another day on the mats at Thrive Jiu Jitsu in San Mateo County. It was a day etched into local history, dedicated to the man whose vision and dedication built the thriving community within its walls: Professor OJ Domingues.

In a heartfelt ceremony filled with students, families, and community members, San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa presented Professor OJ with not one, but two significant honors, transforming May 28th into a permanent celebration of his impact.

The first proclamation declared May 28, 2025, as "Professor OJ Domingues Day" throughout San Mateo County. Supervisor Canepa, speaking passionately, highlighted Professor OJ's profound contributions that extend far beyond teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques.

"Professor Domingues embodies the spirit of community," Supervisor Canepa stated. "Through Thrive Jiu Jitsu, he hasn't just built a gym; he's built a sanctuary. A place where discipline is learned, confidence is forged, resilience is built, and a true sense of family flourishes. His dedication to empowering youth, fostering inclusivity, and providing a positive outlet for individuals of all ages and backgrounds has made a tangible difference in countless lives across our county. Naming this day in his honor is a small token of our immense gratitude for his decade of service."

The second honor celebrated the very foundation of that impact: the 10-Year Anniversary of Thrive Jiu Jitsu. A beautifully framed certificate commemorated a remarkable journey that began in 2015. From its inception, Thrive, under Professor OJ's leadership, set itself apart with its core philosophy: "Thrive, don't just survive."

This motto permeates every aspect of the academy. Students aren't just taught submissions and takedowns; they are guided on a path of personal growth, mental fortitude, and mutual respect. Thrive became known for its welcoming atmosphere, exceptional instruction tailored to all levels, and its commitment to building character alongside combat skills. Overcoming challenges, including navigating the difficulties of the pandemic years, the academy emerged stronger, a testament to Professor OJ's unwavering commitment and the loyalty of the Thrive family.

Standing before his students and community, Professor OJ accepted the honors with his characteristic humility and grace. He expressed deep gratitude to Supervisor Canepa and the County. "This day, this recognition, it truly belongs to all of you," Professor OJ later said. "Thrive isn't about me; it's about us. It's about every student who walks through those doors ready to learn, to push themselves, to support their teammates. It's about the families who trust us. Celebrating ten years is a milestone built on your sweat, your dedication, and the incredible community spirit we've nurtured together. 'Professor OJ Domingues Day' is an honor I accept on behalf of the entire Thrive family and the values we strive to live by every day."

The atmosphere at Thrive was electric – a blend of pride, joy, and deep respect. Longtime students shared stories of transformation, parents spoke of the positive impact on their children, and the sense of a close-knit community was palpable.

A Legacy Forged on the Mats

May 28th, 2025, now stands as a dual landmark in San Mateo County:

  1. A permanent "Professor OJ Domingues Day" honoring a leader whose positive influence ripples far beyond the gym.

  2. The 10th Anniversary of Thrive Jiu Jitsu, celebrating a decade of empowering individuals, building resilience, and fostering an unparalleled community spirit under Professor OJ's guidance.

Congratulations, Professor OJ Domingues, on this incredibly well-deserved recognition! Here's to the legacy you've built, the community you've nurtured, and to many more years of helping San Mateo County truly Thrive!
